Farmers market
On the 2nd Saturday of every month a group of local farmers sell their wares. The group has it’s own website. On that website you can subscribe to a podcast called “Local seasonal food” A few days before the market you automatically receive a new episode entitled “Farmers Market: December, 2008 ” When you play this on your computer or your iPod, the presenter tells you what has just come into season: maybe lettuce, strawberries, asparagus, cherries, peas etc.
They also tell you that on the website you can find recipes for using these ingredients and that this fresh seasonal produce will be available on the market stalls this coming Saturday.
You are planning a dinner party and go to the website to look at recipes (marketing result 1) AND you go to the market for your seasonal veg. (marketing result 2)
What is a podcast?
If you haven't heard our Introduction to web audio then you can do so below.
Website audio: an introduction (Duration 4:51)
The Apple iPod is the ubiquitous mp3 player which lends it's name to podcasting. At the simplest level podcasting provides an audio file which can be downloaded to your computer and transferred to your mp3 player so you can listen to that programme on the move. There is a demonstration video of free podcasts on Apple's iTunes music store here (The iTunes software works for Windows and Apple computers by the way).
How does podcasting work?
Imagine a 10 part television programme.
It has an overall title, say 'Big Cats'. each of these 10 parts may have a separate title, 'Episode 1: The Sumatran Tiger', Episode 2: The Snow Leopard' etc.
When you subscribe to a podcast you subscribe to the title: 'Big Cats.
Subscribing usually involved nothing more than clicking a link on a website. This tells the software on your computer to check the address of the podcast at regular intervals to see if a new 'Episode' has been added. If it has then it is automatically downloaded to your computer.
The next time you connect your mp3 player (iPod or similar) to your computer the new episode is copied over so it is available for you to listen to when you are out and about.
So, once someone has subscribed to your podcast they need do nothing more. They will receive every episode you 'publish'.
Why would I need a podcast?
New media in the form of video and audio is fast taking over from printed documentation. Television and radio are moving towards delivering programmes to a variety of devices; mobile phones, media players (iPods etc), games consoles as well as through digital television.
For one of our law firm clients, for instance, we produce a monthly podcast relating to changes in legislation in regard to media and telecommunications law.
Delivering your message to clients and/or staff on a regular basis can deliver value added services to those clients/staff at a fraction of the price of printed material.
If you would lie to dicuss your ideas for podcasting for your business please call 07956 292 570 or email ray@elstreedv.co.uk for a no-obligation consultation.
